Mission Statement

The BS in Information Studies degree is an interdisciplinary program designed to provide students with technological skills and a strong theoretical foundation in information science necessary to be leaders in today’s information society.  Of central interest are people and their interactions with information and technology. The program emphasizes key digital and communication technologies, information architecture, information behaviors, and interaction design.

Students graduating from the BSIS degree will:

1.      Possess technological skills, including object-oriented programming, web technologies, database design, and networks and communication systems.

2.      Understand the information behaviors of people interacting with information systems of various types, and how to measure, assess, and integrate this knowledge into design.

3.     Have a firm grasp of information science concepts, such as the nature of information and how it is created, communicated, stored, and retrieved.

4.     Possess strong analytical skills necessary to be effective problem solvers.

Goal 1: Not Assigned
Develop strong critical thinking and problem solving skills using structured methods of analysis and troubleshooting of complex problems in technology rich systems and environments
1. Program Learning Outcome Statement
Identify the basic mechanisms for problem analysis, as well as developing, organizing, and debugging computer programs (COP 2931 Object Oriented Programming, COP 2930 IT Concepts, LIS 4930 Data Structures and Algorithms).

Goal 3: Not Assigned
Develop discipline specific skills by incorporating the principles of computer hardware, software, and emerging trends in internet technology along with an understanding of best practices in information organization and architectural structure of websites to facilitate the development of relevant and efficient methodologies consistent with the way people seek and use information
1. Program Learning Outcome Statement
Understand the theories and issues surrounding various information behaviors, such as information needs, seeking, and use, and application of interface design, modeling, prototyping, usability testing, and evaluation (LIS 4204 Information Behaviors, LIS 3352 Interaction Design).
2. Program Learning Outcome Statement
Understand the foundations of the discipline, history, core theories and methodologies, and approaches to information science, with an emphasis on the critical role of information technology (LIS 3261 Introduction to Information Science, LIS 3353 IT Concepts for Information Professionals, LIS 3783 Information Architecture).
Goal 4: Not Assigned
Develop oral and written communication skills by designing and developing individual and team-based research projects, underpinned by appropriate information resources, cited properly, and stylistically-correct that provide insight into a well-defined research inquiry in an ethical manner.
1. Program Learning Outcome Statement
Develop information research skills that apply to academic libraries and the Internet with a focus on developing skills to locate, evaluate, and use sources of information (LIS 4204 Information Behaviors).
2. Program Learning Outcome Statement
